NEW YORK, NY – America could be reasonably seen as entering a new era of acceptable political beliefs, and a new era of mainstream politics. Mr. Zohran Mamdani has notably won the democratic primary to be mayor of New York and seems likely to win the general election. Yesterday, another Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member, Omar Fateh, won the local Democratic party endorsement over the incumbent mayor. With success like this, it shouldn't be surprising that as of May 2025 62% of Americans aged 18-29 hold favorable views of socialism, and 34% hold favorable views of communism. This generation is the first generation to have a majority hold favorable views of socialism in polling (with this first happening in 2021).
Is it possible that Generation Z will re-align American politics for good, and if so, will Socialism be the only new ideology on the politically acceptable table?
Enigmatically, Gen-Z (especially Gen-Z men) were a large part of why Harris lost the election, with a strong movement of this younger generation to the right. This, alongside the subsequent rise in the popularity of socialism and communism shows that the material conditions of Americans, which have largely worsened since 2020 and were stagnant for a long period before that, have pushed Americans either to blame the economic system or puzzlingly blame trans kids in sports. This, alongside other changed behaviors in the American voting population suggests that America is headed for what could be a permanent shift in American politics. Much like the Labour party supplanted the Liberals in early 20th century British politics, we might similarly see social democrats and democratic socialists overrun and outnumber the traditional leadership and base of the democratic party. While 62% of young Americans hold favorable views of socialism, 43% of Americans overall hold positive views of socialism. Which suggests that the majority of registered democrats may feel positively about socialist politicians and policies (Bernie Sanders has long been one of the most positively viewed politicians in America).
This, of course, does not come in a vacuum, America currently has its most dangerous and most dangerously far-right president in recent history. The far-right has proven that it can infect the minds of the young and take over, if but for a brief moment. However, Socialists policies that address the material needs of everyday Americans will always beat out rhetoric and fluster. Like Sophists were beaten out by Philosophers, bread will more effectively convince a hungry man then show with fluster
